Walking through the door at Design Archives Vintage and Emporium is like stepping back in time. West of Paisley, inc. is the collaborative works of the visual artists James West Nickerson and Elizabeth Paisley Hendrix.

West and Paisley, more commonly known as James and Liz, met in 2005 on Tate Street in Greensboro. They have been together as a couple since 2006. The name “West of Paisley, inc.” derived from when the artist both realized they signed their work by their middle names, which sounded more interesting than their very common first names.

Bio:

Building on my Swedish heritage and Scandinavian sensibility, I have begun creating characters inspired by Swedish folklore. The first subject fashioned was the “Tomte” (aka Gnome) in various sizes and color combinations.
I use as much natural and post-consumer recycled material as possible in my art. My love and passion for conservation and appreciation of nature runs deep in my veins. All pieces are handmade and therefore each is unique in its appearance.
Inspired by my young daughter’s “Troll hunting” expedition during a recent vacation to my hometown (Linköping, Sweden), I have added Trolls to the collection.

“Jordan Grace Owens is an artist & illustrator with a penchant for making and an eye for design. She lives in Greensboro, North Carolina where she spends most of her days losing track of time in her cozy little studio.

Most of her artwork is developed from sketchbook doodles or inspiring old snapshots. She likes to test the waters in a variety of media, but whichever tools, supplies, or surfaces she’s working with, she often finds herself cutting out along the outlines. Her cut-outs range from tiny moveable paper dolls whose limbs are cut and reassembled from hand-colored sheets of paper, to large-scale acrylic portraits painted and cut from four-foot sheets of plywood.

A lot of the themes in her work are derived from her affection for early- to mid-century style, art, music, film, and design. She’s a real sucker for a well-loved special vintage find, and she wants to give that same sense of quirky personality and preciousness to the items and images she makes.”
